#Walk4MD: Planning with a Passion

walkblog-001Hi there, my name is Candisse McCormick, and I have been the Calgary Walk for Muscular Dystrophy organizer from the start.

When Muscular Dystrophy Canada first brought out the idea to have nationwide Walks to raise funds and awareness, I was thrilled!  This idea that turned into a reality has made a huge impact on the lives of so many!

Many people think that planning the Walk event is a lot of work, and sure it is.  However, when you have the passion to do it and see it come to fruition, it’s an empowerment that no words can truly explain.  But I will try…

Going back to our very first Walk in Calgary, I was STRESSED!  I had such high hopes for us to meet our fundraising goal, worried about if enough people were going to show up, wondering if we had all the details covered…

Then registration time came and I was ecstatic to see the lines of the people show up, the money rolling in and being counted;  We WERE DOING IT! It was awe-inspiring to see how much money could be raised by just one person, or a team! Even more impressive is when you finally add it all up and get your grand total! It seems hard to believe, but that’s just proof that when you have the passion for a cause – anything is possible.

#TBT Checking up on Dustin and the Firefighter Games!

DustinLast year we spoke with Dustin LePage from the Robson Volunteer Fire Department about their fundraising activities (read: Putting the ‘Fun’ in Fundraising). At that time, they were working towards putting on their first Firefighter Games, and now it’s almost time for the second edition! The Castlegar Source caught up with Dustin to learn all about the 2015 Games:

EXPLOSIVE EXCITEMENT ON TAP AT 2015 FIREFIGHTER GAMES IN PASS CREEK by Kyra Hoggan

The term ‘explosive’ is an exaggeration often used to get people excited about something, but make no mistake – it’s a 100-per-cent-accurate description of the Firefighter Games (see attached video, in which the 2014 opening ceremonies include blowing up a car and RV, and check out the resulting 100-plus-foot fireball).

Family fun was never cooler than this!

“It’s going to be even bigger and better this year, but the details are secret – we intend to really ‘wow’ the crowd,” said Dustin LePage, of the Robson Fire Department which hosts the games.

And that’s literally just the beginning – LePage says the two-day event, slated for Sept. 5 and 6 in the soccer fields in Pass Creek Park, is jam-packed with excitement and entertainment, in a wholesome environment the whole family can enjoy.

#ParaTough! Alison Levine is living the dream as a full-time athlete

This first appeared in the October 2014 Action newsletter from the Québec region.

photo 2An adaptive sport and leisure information day was held in Montréal on April 5, 2014. It was organized by Muscular Dystrophy Canada, in partnership with the Rehabilitation Centre Lucie-Bruneau, Marie-Enfant Rehabilitation Centre of the CHU Ste-Justine and Parasport Quebec. A hundred people came to lectures on topics such as adaptive travel, leisure, and work. They also had access to exhibitors and were able to participate in different sports (dance, boccia, powerchair soccer).

Alison Levine was also on hand to demonstrate her skills in boccia. Alison is affected by idiopathic muscular dystrophy. She just finished competing in boccia with Team Canada at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto. Alison had a great tournament – she won a silver medal in Boccia Pairs, but unfortunately lost in the bronze medal match. She is now ranked as the #1 female player in the world, and the #9 player overall! (more…)
