2009 Grant Recipients

The following 2 grants were awarded through the Rachel Fund:

Dr. Bernard Jean Jasmin

  • University of Ottawa
  • Role of the RNA-binding protein staufen in myotonic dystrophy type 1
  • 3 years
  • The overall objective of this grant is to determine how Staufen 1 contributes to the complex phenotype seen in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1. The results of these studies may lead to the development of therapeutic strategies based on the expression and localization of RNA-binding proteins in skeletal muscle.

Dr. Jack Puymirat

  • Laval University
  • Pathogenesis of myotonic dystrophy
  • 3 years
  • The overall objective of this grant is to identify all molecular mechanisms/pathways at the source of the diverse symptoms experiences by patients. The results may lead to the development of therapies aimed at these newly identified molecular targets.
