Milton Downey Golf Tournament Raises $34,000!
“We want to give back to an organization that is dear to us,” says Chris Palmer. Chris is the father of 11 year old Matthew, who is affected by congenital muscular dystrophy. The family certainly gives back in a BIG way hosting the Milton Downey Golf Tournament in Sussex, New Brunswick which raised more than $34, 000 this year.
Chris, along with wife Melana, daughter Mya, and son Matt are energetic and dedicated volunteers for Muscular Dystrophy Canada raising funds and heightening awareness for the cause. The support they receive from family, friends, colleagues and their community is extraordinary. Chris says, “We try and give them a memorable experience, great value for their registration fee. We’re told they had the best time and reserve their spot for next year!”
This year’s tournament was held on August 11th at the beautiful Sussex Golf and Curling Club where 148 golfers (including Muscular Dystrophy Canada CEO Catherine Sherrard) hit the green in 37 teams. Unfortunately the “hole in one” prizes- a Ford truck, $20,000 travel gift card, 2015 Harley Davidson and $40, 000 cash went unclaimed. Maybe someone will have a lucky stroke next year!
The fun didn’t stop on the course! When the golfers returned to the clubhouse, they were greeted with a souvenir team photo and a delicious steak dinner, as well as a VERY lively auction. Auctioneer, Murray O’Connor did great job of raising bids on a wide variety of items including snow blowers, a Harley Davidson patio set, autographed Boston Bruins memorabilia, a stainless steel BBQ, and so much more!
The event’s special guest, Boston Bruins Alum Rick “Nifty” Middleton told stories of his days as a player in the National Hockey League and answered lots of questions for the crowd.
You could have heard a pin drop in the very rowdy crowd when Matthew Palmer took the microphone to thank everyone for their generosity. Matt said, “This cause is so important to me and my family and we thank you for all of your support!”
Muscular Dystrophy Canada thanks the Palmer Family, Murray O’Connor, Rick Middleton, the Sussex Golf and Curling Club, Investors Group, Downey Ford Sales, Toys for Big Boys, Maritime Travel, the golfers, event volunteers and EVERYONE who helped make this event a great success, your support is truly appreciated!
