#Walk4MD 10 years of FUN-raising and support: Team Alex
The Walk for Muscular Dystrophy season is upon us and we’re thrilled to be celebrating our 10th anniversary of our signature event nationwide. So it’s time to get on those computers and sign up to walk, wheel or roll at your local #Walk4MD event!
The #Walk4MD is a celebration and fundraising event in support of Canadian individuals and families affected by neuromuscular disorders. This fully accessible event takes place in 50 locations across Canada, and includes activities for kids, snacks, refreshments prizes and our beloved Fire Fighters.
Over the past 10 years we have had enormous support from our communities and participants who join us year after year. Teams have been at the heart of the #Walk4MD events, many of them from the very beginning. We reached out to Team Alex from the Durham Walk for Muscular Dystrophy to find out why the #Walk4MD is a yearly event for them. Here’s what they had to say.
Why did you start Team Alex – When we were approached about doing a Walk in our region, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to be able to focus on something positive and also try to make a difference. Not just for ourselves but for the many clients of MDC.
Why do you return each year – We come back every year because it is important to continue fundraising and raising awareness. We also find much hope in meeting others that are affected, especially those new to the Walk. We like showing them that there is hope and a tremendous amount of support.
How do you keep Team Alex motivated and refreshed? -We have an awesome group of friends and family who continue to stand behind us in our journey. Each year they continue to be inspired by Alex and our story, and look forward to the Walk as an opportunity to re-connect as a group. We also do a Team Alex pot luck lunch which turns the day into an even bigger event for us as a team.
Favourite memory from the last 10 years? – Since we have been doing the Walk for so many years, it is hard to pick just one memory, so we will provide you with a snap shot. From Firefighter friends showing up unexpectedly (Rick Mills), to meeting Molly the Fire dog and her owner Terry, to the huge support from the Whitby Fire Service and announcing every growing totals each year. We are thrilled with the huge growth of the Walk and as a family we’re thrilled to have witnessed Alex growing into a true ambassador!
Best fundraising tip? – Have a very engaging message, right from the outset, sent to every contact you have. However, it is important not to drive people crazy by sending out reminders. If they don’t give one year, you can always try again another time.
Anything else you’d like readers to know? The biggest thing, especially for those who have not joined the Walk before, is to not be afraid. It is not just about the money raised but about finding a sense of community and camaraderie. The Walk can be as big or as small as you want it to be. There is no pressure from anyone to be more than you want to be.
