The first event was held in 2003, when 16 emergency services personnel cycled across approximately 260 km to support Frédérick Duguay, a young boy from Sherbrooke affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Thanks to the hard work of organizers, sponsors and participants, the Tour has grown to more than 50 cyclists, who bike across the regions of Estrie, Centre-du-Québec and Bois-Francs each year. The Tour leaves Sherbrooke and the route usually makes its way through Windsor, Richmond, l’Avenir and Drummondville, then through small villages before arriving in Victoriaville.  The next day they cycle through Warwick, Kingsey Falls, Saint-Félix-de-Kingsey, Richmond, Windsor and finally end back to Sherbrooke.

For the 2013 Tour, the 10th anniversary of the event, Frédérick also made the journey, riding in a sidecar on the bicycle of his mother, Sandra Lacroix. It was an exhilarating experience for him, and the following year, he accompanied his father, Réjean Duguay, for the full three-day ride.

Sherbrooke Fire Fighters have been regular participants in the Tour, and they also helped Frédérick experience the Scott High Rise Challenge in 2012. During that event, a team of Fire Fighters used a stretcher chair to carry Frédérick up the 1125 steps of the Montréal Stock Exchange Tower. As usual, Frederick’s humor and adventurous spirit left an impression of strength, courage and perseverance among those who experienced that unique event with him.

An exceptional person and a charming young man, Frédérick had a great thirst for life and was very funny, spreading happiness and his contagious laugh everywhere he went. He also was extremely devoted to the Tour and was always prepared to get involved.

Frédérick’s spirit lives on among the organizers and participants of the 14th Frédérick Duguay Cycling Tour, which will be held on August 17–19, 2016. The organizers hope to raise $50,000 this year to support research to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy.
