Great Success in Turning Penticton Green!!
The South Okanagan Chapter members were busy the first two weeks of March trying to turn Penticton green with their paper Shamrocks and Shamrock pins. They spent a weekend in the mall raising awareness about muscular dystrophy, and giving away the coveted St. Patrick’s Day button for a $2.00 donation. The time in the mall raised over $700.00 for the chapter. In addition to this, a group of male chapter members went out on St. Patrick’s Day and did a tour of some of the local establishments that were having their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The tour collected close to another $500.00! Chapter members flogged their workplaces and raised yet another few hundred dollars. We had about 10 community venues decorating their walls with the paper shamrocks, and these venues contributed about $500.00 as well. All in all, this year with the National Shamrock Campaign, we raised over $2000.00, and had a great time doing it. We educated a lot of people about our cause over the two weeks in March and it is a fundraiser that we hope to continue to do for years to come.
Lift for Life
Working hard for Muscular Dystrophy Canada! Penticton Lift for Life event took place on January 31, 2011 and raised over $1500.00!
Students of all ages take part in local Walk for Muscular Dystrophy
On May 4th, and then again on May 11th, hundreds of local students walked for Muscular Dystrophy in Penticton and Trout Creek. On May 4th, at 10:30 am, the first walk took place at Pen Hi track with Pen Hi, McNicoll and KVR schools taking part. About 500 students walked or ran 6 laps around the track before enjoying a treat provided by Safeway. The Fire Fighters were on hand with the antique fire truck to start the walk off. Then, at noon, the second walk began. Over 1000 student walked around the block and back to the school to enjoy a hot dog lunch, again supplied by Safeway. Local student musicians were on hand to entertain the students at both walks, and the Mayor Dan Ashton had opening remarks to all the students.
On May 11th, our elementary school, Trout Creek Elementary, held its second annual walk. About 100 students in grades Kindergarten to grade 5 walked around the beach path and back to the school during the afternoon. They got back to school in time to enjoy some fruit and granola bars.
Each school had activities taking place to promote the walk weeks before it took place. We had carnivals at one middle school and even a tug of war between the grads and firemen at the high school.
All in all the event was successful with students learning about muscular dystrophy, and also raising money towards the cause. Our goal was to raise 13.000.00 and we are hoping to do that. Next year our goal is to add one more elementary school to our walk days
