Equipment Program
Having a diagnosis of muscular dystrophy is expensive: wheelchairs, scooters, orthotics, hospital beds, and other essential equipment and repairs can cost tens of thousands of dollars annually. Muscular Dystrophy Canada's mobility equipment program has been helping people with neuromuscular disorders to beat these challenges for a significant part of our history, because we realize how important it is for people with neuromuscular disorders to have the resources to live independent and contributing lives. From equipment recycling efforts, to funding in whole or in part of the purchase of new equipment, people with neuromuscular disorders and their families are benefiting from the financial donations and volunteer efforts of this essential program.
Please note: Muscular Dystrophy Canada's mobility equipment programs are managed regionally, and there may be differences seen between regions and provinces, depending on which particular items are not covered by other provincial agencies or government programs. For requests that fall within our mandate, staff will first check the equipment stock to see if something appropriate is available. If the item is not in stock, Muscular Dystrophy Canada may provide some funding towards its purchase. We cost-share extensively with other community agencies and, in many areas of the country, with Muscular Dystrophy Canada Chapters who operate service funds designated specifically to help their members. Sometimes though, these sources are not enough to cover the full cost of the equipment. When this happens, or when a request is received for something that we cannot cover, occupational therapists can usually offer suggestions of alternative funding sources.
If you are in need of equipment
If you are registered with Muscular Dystrophy Canada and want to access the mobility equipment program, it is important to involve us early in the process. When you first identify a need, a quick call to your regional office will help you determine if Muscular Dystrophy Canada is likely to be in a position to assist. Later, after you have been assessed for a device that will work for you, have your therapist submit a written request so that Muscular Dystrophy Canada staff can verify that it fits within the program parameters and check to see if any other funder should be responsible for its provision. If another agency or program should be involved, a referral will be made by the therapist.
